conhecidas pedrinhas.

Nazaré, a primeira
Maria: "Senhora, Valei-me!". Imediata e milagrosamente o cavalo
Negra sentada, a amamentar o Menino.

A popularidade

In
the photos above, we can see that Sítio da Nazaré
give us one of the most wonderful and amazing
views of all the Portuguese coast. From here we have the privilege of
seing all the coast, from Nazaré to Peniche and in the north side we can see
Mira de Aire e Candeeiros mountain. On sunny days we can also see the famous
Berlengas island.
The Sítio, due to be difficult
access, it only began to develop in the mid of seventeenth century. It was the
mechanical lift installation, for the connection between the Sítio
and the beach, in 1889, that gave a real population increase.
During
the eighteenth and the nineteenth century a huge number of pilgrims visited
seasonally this place, due to it natural and religious conditions and for this
reason the population grew up and the traditional street market too. This trade
is already an icon of this beautiful Sítio.
This square introduce us a beauty and single pavement. A
pavement enriched with several geometric patterns from squares to triangles all
made with the well-known little rocks. These little rocks all together make
beautiful masterpieces scattered all over the country and all over the world.

The Legend
On top of the Nazaré cliff, the first building will
has been the Capela da Memória erected by D. Fuas Roupinho in
1182. D. Fuas Roupinho, mayor of Porto de Mós castle. He hunted in his lands
when he saw a deer and he started to chase it with his fellows.
During
the hunt, the deer went to the coast towards a cliff in the Sítio da Nazaré.
Suddenly everything was covered by a thick fog rising from the sea. When the
knight realized that he was at the top of the cliff, in danger of death, he
recognized that he was next to the cave where a small image of Our Lady and the
Child was venerated and prayed in a desperate cry to the Virgin Mary:« Help
me, Lady.». Immediately and miraculously the horse holding his paws on the
rocky beak, the Beak of Miracle,
saving the knight of certain death.
As
acknowledgment, the noble knight sent to call masons and he had built on the
cave, in memory of the miracle, a small church, the Chapel of Memory. When the
masons disassembled the cave´s altar, they found an ivory chest. It had some
relics and a parchment in which it had been written the story of the small
image sculpted in wood, this image showed a Black Virgin sitting and she was suckling
the Child.

In 1377, King Fernando (1367-1383)
due to the increase of pilgrims, had built a church near the chapel, where the
image of Our Lady of Nazareth was transferred. The popularity of this devotion
at the time of Portuguese Discoveries was so great among the people of the sea
that Vasco da Gama, before and after his first trip to India, and Pedro Álvares
Cabral, who came to discover Brazil, came on a pilgrimage to Lady of Nazareth.
The
next three centuries were of great expansion for Our Lady of Nazareth´s workship
even in its Sanctuary either in Portugal and in the "Portuguese
World". To this day, tradition points to visitors the mark left by one of
the legs of D. Fuas' horse on the top of the Beak of Miracle next to the Memory
Chapel, in Sítio da Nazaré.
