No episódio 18 do programa «Cuidado com a Língua»transmitido na RTP1 no dia 27 de Novembro de 2017, a Calçada Portuguesa foi a
personagem principal. Neste episódio houve uma ligação muito forte entre a arte
da calçada e a arte de falar português.
A Calçada Portuguesa na Praça do Município em Lisboa
"A palavra espinhado
que significa em espinha é da família de espinha. Provém do latim
com o significado de espinheiro (planta), roseira brava, espinha dorsal, coluna
vertebral. No plural já no latim spina significava vícios, defeitos, rodeios,
subtilezas.
Neste caso,

extensão e grande largura no Brasil. O calçadão do Rio de Janeiro é a grande
obra emblemática de Calçada Portuguesa.
Foi mandado fazer em 1906 e tem 4,15 quilómetros. Inicialmente as ondas
nele representadas eram perpendiculares ao comprimento da calçada mas com a
reforma da década de 70 ganharam o sentido atual, paralelo ao comprimento da
calçada e às ondas do mar.
As pedras aí utilizadas foram importadas de Portugal, também
de Portugal seguiu um grupo de calceteiros para proceder à aplicação da
calçada. A palavra calceteiro designa o operário que aplica calçada em
ruas. Formou-se do verbo calcetar que vem da palavra calceta,
originária do latim.
Calceta
A palavra calceta
entrou no Português no final do século XVI, proveniente do espanhol. Designava

Calçada é o particípio passado substantivado do verbo
calçar, com o significado de calcetar. Formou-se o substantivo calçada
com o sentido que aqui vemos, o pavimento formado por pequenos elementos de
pedra. Por sua vez, a palavra latina que significava calçada é da família de
calcanhar e de calcar, no sentido de pisar com os pés.
A palavra releixo
é um regionalismo que designa o ato ou efeito de releixar que é exatamente o
mesmo que relaxar. Relaxar significa tornar frouxo, diminuir a tensão. A
pedra deixada com releixo na calçada quando está a ser feita, ainda não
está bem presa. A palavra relaxar adquire também o significado de
descontrair, condescender, enfraquecer ou afrouxar. Por isso o substantivo releixo
também significa desleixo, desmazelo.
A palavra pedra
tem origem no latim com o mesmo significado. Da família de pedra é o nome
Pedro. No Evangelho Segundo São Mateus, refere-se que Cristo terá dito a Pedro,
seu Apóstolo, nomeando-o fundador da sua Igreja, «Tu és Pedro e sobre esta
pedra edificarei a minha Igreja.
Litologia
é a descrição das características físicas das rochas como a cor, a estrutura,
os componentes minerais e o tamanho do grão. Os elementos de formação da
palavra são de origem grega e significam pedra e estudo. Também se denomina Petrografia com origem
no latim."
In the eighteen
episode of the program «Cuidado com a Língua» broadcast in RTP1 on
November 27, 2017, the Portuguese Cobblestone was the main character. In this
episode there was a very strong connection between the art of the pavement and
the art of speaking Portuguese.
The
Portuguese Cobblestone in the Town Hall Square in Lisbon
The espinhado word that means
espinha is from the spine family. It comes from Latin with the meaning
of hawthorn (plant), wild rose, backbone, spine. In the plural already in Latin
it meant vices, defects, detours, subtleties.
In this case, the term espinhado refers
to one of several styles and decorative themes that exist in the art of the
Portuguese Cobblestone.
General Eusebio Pinheiro Furtado who was
governor of São Jorge Castle in Lisbon between 1840 and 1846 was who decided to
pave the Lisbon fortress with white limestone stones cut by spaces for others
of black basalt. These stones were placed by prisoners of this time, who were
called grilhetas or calcetas. The history tells us that the city
in pilgrimage ascended its fortified hill to admire the mosaic that the
captives had settled. The Lisbon Council liked the work so much that it
replicated the idea in Rossio in 1848, this time using limestone glass. This is
another type of limestone, black and white, in a design inspired by the
Discoveries. It was named Wide Sea because it represented the waves of
the sea, whose crossing led the Portuguese navigators to cross the Cape of
Storms and arrived in Brazil. During the first years of the twentieth century
the portuguese pavement was covering Lisbon until the Marquis of Pombal.

Words With History
The pavement on Copacabana beach in
Rio de Janeiro with the composition and design of the Portuguese Cobblestone
was made known to the world in 1942 with the film "Saludos Amigos" by

Calçadão is the augmentative
of the noun calçada, precisely by its extension and great width in
Brazil. The pavement of Rio de Janeiro is the great emblematic work of
Portuguese Pavement. It was ordered in 1906 and it has 4.15 kilometers. In the
begginning the waves represented in it were perpendicular to the length of the
pavement but with the reform of the 1970s they gained the current meaning,
parallel to the length of the pavement and the sea waves.
The stones
used there were imported from Portugal, from Portugal also followed a group of
Portuguese Pavement Craftsmen to proceed with the pavement application. The
word calceteiro means the worker
who applies pavement in streets. It was formed from the verb calcetar
that comes from the word calceta, originating from Latin.

Calceta is from the family of the words calças and calçado. Originally the Romans wore neither socks nor trousers and learned from the Germans, who were accustomed to a colder climate, to wear these clothes. Then they designated the pants with the word used to designate the footwear, the shoe but in the female. Over time, the trousers have become longer until they reach the waist. In the sixteenth century, the trousers were divided into two parts, the one that covered the belly and the thighs kept the same name, pants and the other that covered the legs and the foot was called pantyhose and then only hose with the ellipse of the word pants.
The word calceta get in the
Portuguese language in the late sixteenth century, coming from Spanish. It
meant an iron ring attached to the ankle of the prisoner and attached to his
waist by an iron chain. Like the trousers, hose ran from waist to ankle. By
extension of meaning, the word calceta came to designate the prisoner
and in Portugal, in the nineteenth century began as the prisoners called
grilhetas or calcetas that were busy with the streets pavement and thus it was
formed the verb calcetar of the word calceta.
Maço is an instrument made up
of a hardwood block, usually with a parallelepiped form bundled in half for
uses similar of the hammer. This is a pylon used by Portuguese pavement
craftsmen to hit the stone until it is securely attached to the ground.
Maço comes from the word maça
and it also means the same instrument used by the portuguese pavement
craftsmen. It also served to beat or flay the flax, it is also a rather heavy,
thicker stick at one side and it was once used as a weapon. Maçar means
not only striking with the maço or maça, but figuratively, boring
with long talk and annoying.
Calçar means coating the feet
of shoes or the hands of gloves, or in the case that brought us here,it means
to pave streets or walks, that is, calcetar. Calçada is the past
participle of the verb calçar, meaning of calcetar. The noun calçada
was formed with the meaning we see here, the pavement formed by small stone
elements. In turn, the Latin word that meant calçada is of the family of
calcanhar and calcar, in the sense of treading with the feet.
The word releixo is a
regionalism that designates the act or effect of releixar that is
exactly the same as relaxar. Relaxar means becoming loose,
lessening tension. The stone left with releixo on the pavement when it
is being made it is still not well secured. The word relaxar also
acquires the meaning of relaxing, condescending, weakening or loosening. That
is why the noun also means slovenliness, sloppiness.
The word pedra comes from
Latin with the same meaning. Of the pedra family is the name Pedro.
In the Gospel According to St. Matthew, Christ has said to Pedro, his Apostle,
naming him the founder of his Church, "You are Peter and on this rock I
will build my Church.
Lithology
is the description of the physical characteristics of the rocks as the color,
the structure, the mineral components and the size of the grain. The elements
of formation of the word are of Greek origin and signify pedra and estudo.
Also called Petrography with origin in Latin.
